I just realized that, IMO, what is hurting liberalism in the USA is our perfectionism. If someone gets 98% of their work "right" that is no longer good enough and instead we focus on the 2% that doesn't match our personal position. To make it worse, your 2% is different from my 2% is different from the next person's...
